Exploring Wider Educational Recognition for Martial Arts Achievement

Martial Arts Education Group is an independent research initiative exploring how the dedication, discipline and applied technical competence developed through long-term Martial Arts training might be more clearly recognised within the wider UK education framework.

Initially, we are conducting structured research with the Taekwondo community to assess appetite, likely uptake and practical considerations.

We are investigating whether there is genuine sector demand for an optional, externally recognised qualification that could sit alongside existing club grading structures and help students evidence their achievement beyond the club environment.

Why This Matters

Thousands of young people train in Taekwondo across the UK, often for many years. Along the way they develop valuable skills and attributes - commitment, resilience, confidence, focus, leadership, and applied technical competence.

Within Taekwondo, these achievements are clearly recognised through grading systems and long-term progression. Outside Taekwondo, however, it can be difficult for schools, colleges, and other organisations to understand what those achievements represent.

There may be an opportunity to bridge this gap by exploring an optional pathway that translates long-term Taekwondo achievement into a form that is more readily understood within educational contexts - without altering existing club grading systems.

For Club Owners and Instructors

We understand that Taekwondo clubs already have established structures, traditions and grading systems that work well for students. This project is not about replacing those systems - it is about exploring whether there is an additional, optional pathway that could support student progression and provide a value-added offering for clubs.

Any future pathway would be developed in consultation with clubs and aligned with recognised qualification frameworks.

If sector demand supports development, potential benefits may include:

  • An additional pathway for students who want wider recognition of their training
  • Increased retention for long-term students
  • A clear “milestone” achievement for older juniors and teens
  • A structured option that complements existing gradings rather than competing with or distracting from them

Most importantly: clubs would remain fully independent and continue to teach and grade as they always have.

For Parents and Students

Taekwondo training develops real, transferable skills that can support young people far beyond sport - confidence, discipline, resilience, focus and long-term commitment.

We are exploring whether students and families would see value in an optional qualification that could help communicate those achievements more clearly in contexts such as:

  • School enrichment and wider achievement

  • Sixth form, college or apprenticeship applications

  • Personal statements and CVs

This would be designed to complement existing Taekwondo progression, not replace it.

What This is Not

To be clear, this project is not intended to:

  • Replace or interfere with belt grading systems

  • Judge clubs or compare grading standards

  • Require clubs to change their teaching approach

  • Create competition between clubs
  • Impose a new curriculum on existing training

Any future pathway would be optional, designed to recognise competence developed through normal training.

Who We Are

Martial Arts Education Group is a UK-based educational research initiative formed by practitioners and educators with experience in qualification design and regulated frameworks.

The purpose of this research phase is to determine whether meaingful sector demand for the formal recognition of Taekwondo skills within the national regulated educational framework exists.

Research Phase: Have Your Say

We are currently gathering evidence from the Taekwondo community to understand:

  • Whether there is genuine interest in wider educational recognition
  • How many students might realistically participate
  • What concerns clubs or families would have
  • What pricing and delivery would feel viable

Your responses will help determine how this project should proceed.

Club Owner & Instructors Survey
This survey forms part of an independent research project exploring whether there is viable demand within the UK Taekwondo community for an optional, externally recognised competence qualification that could sit alongside existing grading systems.
Your responses will remain anonymous and will help determine whether this project should proceed.

SECTION 1 - ABOUT YOUR CLUB

1. What style does your club primarily follow?
2. Approximately how many active students train at your club?
4. How long has your club been operating?

SECTION 2 - INITIAL APPETITE

5. In principle, would you be open to offering students an optional, externally recognised competence qualification that complements (but does not replace) belt grading?

SECTION 3 - REALISTIC UPTAKE

8. Would you be willing for students to travel to a centralised examination venue once per year (rather than hosting in your own club)?

SECTION 4 - PRICING & INCENTIVE

9. At what price point do you believe an externally recognised qualification would feel realistic to families?
10. If clubs received a small administrative percentage (e.g. 10–15%) per candidate entered, would this influence your decision to participate?

SECTION 5 - VALUE PERCEPTION

11. In your view, would parents at your club value an externally recognised qualification that could support:
Check all that apply.

SECTION 6 - ENDORSEMENT FACTOR

12. Would formal endorsement or support from recognised national governing bodies influence your decision to participate?

SECTION 7 - CONCERNS

SECTION 8 - CONCLUSION

15. Based on your current understanding, how likely would you be to explore participation if a well-structured, optional qualification were developed?
If so, please provide your name and contact email address.
Parents Survey
This short survey forms part of an independent research project exploring whether there is genuine demand for an optional, externally recognised Taekwondo competence qualification that could sit alongside existing belt grading.
This research is being conducted to understand whether families would realistically value and support such an option before any further steps are taken.

SECTION 1 - ABOUT YOUR CHILD

1. How old is the Taekwondo student in your household?
2. How long has your child been training in Taekwondo?

SECTION 2 - PERCEIVED VALUE

3. Do you believe Taekwondo develops skills that are valuable beyond sport (e.g. confidence, discipline, resilience, leadership)?
4. If there were an optional qualification that formally recognised your child’s competence and long-term training, would you be interested in learning more?

SECTION 3 - COST

5. If such a qualification were available and priced at approximately £100, would you be willing to enter your child?
6. What price range would feel reasonable for an externally recognised qualification?
7. Would you be willing for your child to travel to a central examination venue once per year (for example, within 1–2 hours travel)?

SECTION 4 - PRACTICAL ENGAGEMENT

8. Would you expect such a qualification to include any of the following?
Check all that apply.
9. In which contexts do you believe an externally recognised qualification would be useful?
Check all that apply.

SECTION 5 - CONCLUSION

10. Based on your current understanding, how likely would you be to enter your child if this became available?
